Tech-related roles dominate Indeed’s best jobs list in Canada for 2023

January 30, 2023

Data engineers still in demand despite downturn-induced layoffs.

Hiring and job-searching platform Indeed has released its list of the 20 best jobs in Canada for 2023.

Tech-related roles dominated the ranking this year, making up 13 of the top 20, demonstrating that workers with specialized technical skills are still highly sought after in the job market despite the continuum of layoffs sweeping across the tech sector.

Topping this year’s list as Canada’s best job was the data engineer, featuring the highest share of postings of all positions at 871 jobs per million. Close to 40 percent of these postings offered hybrid or remote options, with a median annual salary over $100,000.

The highest-earning job on the list was the principal software engineer at 11th place, with a median annual salary of $155,000. The job with the highest number of remote work postings was for engineering managers at 13th place.

Jobs on the list were calculated based on three factors: growth in the share of postings between 2019-2022, a salary above the Canadian median of approximately $65,000, and the flexibility of remote work options.

The ongoing need for technical positions like these is set against the backdrop of over 200,000 workers being laid off in the tech sector since the summer, according to the CBC. The layoffs have impacted some of the world’s largest tech companies, including Microsoft and Amazon. Google’s parent company Alphabet is the latest company to make mass layoffs, leading to its DeepMind office in Edmonton being shut down.

The Canadian software market is still on pace to reach a total revenue of over $19 billion in 2023 according to a recent report, leading Indeed director Michelle Slater to implore Canadians to enhance their skillset if they are on the job hunt.

“With more and more businesses moving their operations online, the demand for technical skills is just going to increase,” said Slater.
